An interview with Cerie Bullivant conducted June 1, 2011, in London, England, by Kanishk Tharoor for the Columbia Center for Oral History, Rule of Law Oral History Project.
Born in England, Cerie Bullivant converted to Islam in his early twenties while attending university and working in London. After earning his English teaching qualification, Mr. Bullivant was en route to Syria when he was detained by British authorities as a terrorist suspect. Mr. Bullivant spent the next two years under a control order, which required him to wear an electronic tag and report daily to the police, before he was acquitted of all charges. Highlights of this interview include Mr. Bullivant’s recollection of his early life and family, the process of his conversion to Islam, his experience living under the control order, the effect of the UK government's allegations on his relationships and public image, and his involvement with Cageprisoners and filmmaking projects.
